Old fashioned fun at harvest time

The first ever Parkrose Harvest Festival will be a real hoe-down!  Families and friends of Parkrose Community are invited to join in the hayrides, free corn on the cob, and square dancing.  On a more modern note there will be swing and ballroom dancing. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be offered for only a dollar.  The Parkrose Harvest Festival, a non-profit event sponsored by Rossi Farms, Maywood Park, and the Parkrose Neighborhood Association, is focused on creating community awareness in Parkrose.  To help community members learn about their neighborhood, the Festival will also include a community information booth.

The Harvest festival will be fun for the whole family, with animal balloons and face painting for the kids, and tractor hayrides for the whole family.   Attend this fun-filled Harvest Fair on Saturday, September 8, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rossi Farms, 3839 N.E. 122nd Ave.  Admission is free. Gateway Area Business Association meeting

This month the Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) will hold their general meeting on Thursday, September 13, at JJ North’s Grand Buffet, 10520 N.E. Kiwanis annual garage sale dates announced

The Columbia View Kiwanis will be holding their annual garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, at Glenfair Elementary School, 15300 NE Glisan St. All proceeds will go to the philanthropic work of their club, including Snow-CAP, the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for Disabled Individuals, and the Green House.

The Columbia View Kiwanis meet every Wednesday at noon to discuss and implement ways to support charitable organizations, such as Snow-CAP, Loaves and Fishes, and many others.  The meetings have a different program each week, often with guest speakers.  The Columbia View Kiwanis also have a bingo game in their weekly meetings. Occasionally, they’re even known to have fun at these meetings!

Elders in Action commission meeting

The Elders in Action commission advises local public officials and the Department of Aging and Disability Services on issues that affect local seniors.  They focus on legislation involving transportation for homebound seniors, housing, nutrition and health care. 

The commission has been a strong voice for seniors for over thirty years.  They have influenced public policy to improve quality of life for seniors and people with disabilities.  The Elders in Action Commission invites interested citizens to join them on Wednesday, September 19, from 12:30 to 3 p.m., at the Multnomah County Aging and Disability Services, 421 S.W. 6th Ave., Suite 300.  For more information about the meeting or about Elders in Action, please call 503-823-5269.

 

Don’t leave government to the politicians

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan group dedicated to encouraging the participation of regular citizens in government and to influencing public policy through advocacy and education.

Early riser with nothing to do?

The Mall 205 Early Risers Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday morning at 7 a.m.  This service club is part of the Kiwanis International, and supports such organizations as Snow-CAP and the East Portland Community Center.  Next Thursday, come on down to the Old Country Buffet in Plaza 205, at 10542 SE Washington St, and help make our world a better place. 

 

Parkrose Business Association meets

New park about to begin progress

Parkrose residents are invited to join in the official groundbreaking for the yet-to-be-named park at N.E. 112th Ave. and Prescott St.  Come to the park grounds to share refreshments and fun with neighbors, local elected officials, and other community leaders.  You can even put forward your idea for a new name.  The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

This one-acre park will be built and sustained by the neighborhood, so everyone is invited to come and pitch in.  North Parkrose Target Area (a project of Family Works) sponsors the park project in partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation, the Bureau of Environmental Services, Parkrose High School, Prescott Elementary, and the Bureau of Housing and Community Development.  The park project is also supported by the Parkrose Neighborhood Association and the Parkrose Business Association.

Retired Educators meeting

The East Multnomah County Retired Educators Association meets in order to promote participation in community activities, especially local school programs.  The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, at the Refectory, 1618 N.E. 122nd Ave.  This meeting will also include Harriet Halverson and her dancing puppets.  Don’t miss this entertaining event. 

Also in September is a field trip to Mary Hill Museum in Washington, including lunch at a hotel on the way.  The Mary Hill Museum is dedicated to the history of the Northwest, including Native American artifacts, Lewis and Clark relics, and much, much more.  The tour will also include an artist from the Crow’s Shadow Institute demonstrating Native American art forms.  The group will be leaving at 8:45 a.m. from Gethescmane Church, S.E. 115th Ave. and Market St.  Cost for the day, including lunch, is $49. Retired federal employees and Mount St. Helens

Parkrose Masonic Lodge meeting

All sorts of services for seniors

The Senior Services Program Office hosts many free informational clinics and health checks.  Senior Services offers a free law clinic every Friday with half-hour consultations.  Make your appointment today!  

Medicare advice is available as well, through SHIBA - Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance.  Volunteers help both seniors and people with disabilities to understand their rights, make informed choices on how to receive their benefits, and file claims and appeals.  Appointments are required. 

You can also get your eyeglasses adjusted by a professional on Friday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Mid-county Rotary Clubs are service organizations that have many irons in the fire.  Among the beneficiaries are a housing project called Habitat for Humanity, numerous scholarships, and International Polio Plus - a project to eradicate polio.  There are two local chapters, whose meetings are listed below.

Recycle for school

The Parkrose High Bronco Boosters hold a beer and soda can and bottle drive on the first Saturday of every month to raise money for Parkrose High School.  Some of the goals are field trips, scholarships, and many other student needs.  The Boosters will be in the East parking lot of Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E. Tired of hearing those airplanes overhead?

Don’t just cover your ears - make a difference.  There are two groups working to actually change things. 

The Port of Portland-sponsored Citizen’s Noise Advisory Committee (CNAC) will be meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 13.  The public is invited, so come to the Airport Maintenance Building at 7111 N.E. The Airtraffic Issues Roundtable (AIR) is sponsored by the City of Portland, and meets on Tuesday, September 4, at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 1221 S.W. 4th St.

Maywood Park City Council meeting

Maywood Park residents have a chance to affect the decisions that are made for them by the city council.  Don’t like all the construction, or some other measure that affects your home? 

The best chance you have to do something about it is before it is implemented - while it is still being discussed in the City Council.  Stand up and let your voice be heard by the government: it is one of the most fundamental rights granted to us as Americans.  Find out what upcoming plans are for your neighborhood - attend a Maywood Park City Council meeting in room 220 at the Maywood Park campus of Mt. Hood Community College, located at N.E. 102nd Ave. and N.E. Prescott St.

A different touch

Come see the concert with a unique twist - both performers perform on the same instrument at the same time.  The LeRoi-Nickel Duo, with Timothy Nickel and Nancy LeRoi Nickel will be displaying their dual talent on both a piano and a pipe organ.  The LeRoi-Nickel Duo has been performing for 25 years all over the world, including appearances at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Czech Republic, and London.

The Nickels have received their Advanced Certificate at the Guildhall School in London, and both are currently on the staff at Marylhurst University.  Timothy Nickel is the Director of Music at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, while Nancy LeRoi Nickel is Director of Music at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

The performance will take place on Saturday, September 29, at 7 p.m. in St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 11229 N.E. Make your neighborhood a better place

Neighborhood meetings are a great way to get involved, know what is going on, and make a difference for yourself and your community.  They provide an opportunity to discuss and solve community issues, and improve the neighborhood though activities such as cleanups and tree plantings.  Neighborhood associations make your neighborhood more exciting through community-organized events and celebrations. Also in September, the Argay Neighborhood Association is hosting their 11th Annual Progressive Dinner, on Saturday, September 29. Mt. Hood Community College taking a holiday

All of Mt. Hood Community College’s (MHCC) campuses, including Maywood Park, will be closed to the public on Wednesday, September 12, in order for all MHCC staff to attend professional development training activities. Normal operating hours will resume on Thursday, September 13.

Great Volunteer Opportunities

Elders in Action announces Fall 2001 training opportunities for volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of seniors in their community.  All training sessions will be held at Elders in Action Office, 501 SW Washington St., Portland, OR 97204. • “Ombudsman Services” training sessions of 11 hours will be held on Monday, September 4, Tuesday, September 5, and Wednesday, September 6.  This unique program requires a special person who is interested in providing individual problem solving assistance, advocacy, and emotional support to seniors and persons with disabilities in the areas of housing, health care, and elder crime and abuse. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of 8 to 10 hours per month.

•“Medicare Fraud Community Education “ training sessions of 14 hours will be held Tuesday, October 2, Wednesday, October 3, and Thursday, October 4.  You can be part of the solution in helping to save billions of Medicare dollars nationwide! As a “Medicare Fraud Squad” team member you will receive training to give community presentations in the Tri- County area about how to identify Medicare Fraud and Abuse and how to report it.

•“Elder Friendly Business Evaluator” training will be held Thursday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  You will learn how to evaluate local businesses for their “Elder Friendliness” and advise managers on how to better serve the older population. Join Elders in Action for this lively training, and help businesses adapt to a growing and changing older market. This opportunity is perfect for someone who likes to shop, explore new businesses, and make their own schedule.

 

Sample Acupuncture, Herbs, and Qigong at Free Seminars

The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is sponsoring free seminars on three consecutive Saturdays, September 15, 22, and 29.  These seminars introduce the public to the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine.  Each Saturday seminar starts at 10 a.m. and goes for 90 minutes. These Saturday seminars are a way for people of all ages to sample acupuncture, Chinese herbs and Qigong meditative exercise in a safe, educational forum. 

The seminar on Saturday, September 15 will focus on herbal remedies, including a look at how herbal formulas are prepared.  On Saturday, September 22, the seminar will demonstrate how the gentle movements of Qigong meditative exercise can ease aches and pains and improve one’s health.  At the final seminar on Saturday, September 29 the topic will be acupuncture: how it works and what it is used for.  Sample acupuncture treatments will be offered.

Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch?

The Lions Club invites you to attend their meeting and find out what they are all about.  Join them and they will treat you to dinner.  The September meetings of the Parkrose Lions Club will be Wednesday, September 5 and Wednesday, September 19.  The meetings will be held at the Royal Garden Restaurant, 13816 N.E. Sandy Blvd.  The meeting begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m.  Come find out what activities the Parkrose Lions will be working on to help the Parkrose Community this month.

 

Indoor Gardening Club

African Violet Society meets

Love African Violets?  Portland has just the club for you - the African Violet Society, a group that can teach you everything you ever wanted to know about growing African Violets.  Meetings often include guest speakers, workshops, or slide shows featuring different violets.  For the September meeting, there will be a lighting expert talking about special lights available for growing African Violets and other types of flowers.  The African Violet Society will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, at Tabor Heights Methodist Church, 6161 S.E. Find your answers

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church will be offering the Alpha Course, a ten-week practical course that serves as an introduction to the Christian faith, and offers answers to key questions.  The meetings begin with a kick-off dinner on Saturday, September 8, which will include lots of information about the upcoming course, as well as a great dinner.  Classes will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, beginning Monday, September 10.  Each weekly session will begin with an informal meal and ends with a small group discussion and interaction.  Join the many who have found answers to their question about life and God.  The course also includes a weekend retreat on Saturday, October 20, and Sunday, October 21.  Meetings will be at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 11229 N.E. Help care for our earth and water

Every month we have the opportunity to learn about the condition of Portland’s lifeblood - our water.  The East Multnomah County Soil and Water Conservation Board is an elected board that meets in a forum open to the public.  Join them for their next meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 10.  This meeting will be held at 2115 S.E. Soroptimists of Portland East

Soroptimist International is the world’s largest classified organization for executive and professional women.  Soroptimist was founded in Oakland, California in 1921 to “foster the ideal of service.”  Among the eighty original members were women in professions that included medicine, laboratory technology, education and printing. 

Today, Soroptimist International has nearly 100,000 members in 119 countries throughout the world.  With more than 50, 000 members in 21 countries, Soroptimist International of the Americas is the largest of the four federations of Soroptimist International. 

Soroptimists of Portland East, the local Mid-county club, accomplish their community service goals through their six programs of service: Women Against Violence, Culture of Peace, Life Long Learning, Habitat, Health Throughout the Whole Life Cycle, and Women, Science and Technology.  Typical projects include: participating in literacy projects; supporting shelters for battered women; participating in environmental clean-up projects; promoting student exchange programs; and other projects as dictated by community need. 

Last year, Soroptimists of Portland East donated over $12,000 to help support fifteen local organizations that focus on meeting the needs of Portland women and children.  Their primary source of funds is the All-Star bingo Hall, located on the corner of S.E. 146th and Stark St.

Hood Community College.  These courses are open to the public and no registration is necessary.  To attend, just come to the Self-Paced Learning Center at the Maywood Park Campus, 10100 N.E. Prescott St. on the day of the class.  The following classes all take place between noon and 1 p.m.:

•How to Buy a Computer: Learn the key questions and terms you need to know in order to find the right computer for you.  Class will be held Tuesday, October 2, and again on Tuesday, November 20.

•Maintaining Your Computer:  Every computer requires regular maintenance and upkeep to function properly for any extended period of time.  This class offers tips to maintain your computer, and will be offered Tuesday, October 16, and again on Tuesday, November 20.

•World Wide Web: This seminar offers an explanation of what the Web is and how it works.  Learn how to find what you are looking for on the World Wide Web.  This class will be held on Tuesday, October 30.

•Using Email Effectively: This class will teach you what you need to get started using email, including the differences between email programs, accessing free email, using the address book, and sending attachments.  This class will be held on Tuesday, November 16.

Go around the world

Join Prescott Elementary School in celebrating their diversity with the first annual Multi-Cultural Fair and Open House.  The school will be welcoming families and the entire community with a trip around world - there will be entertainment and samplings of food and culture from around the world.  This is a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to gather and share in the diverse ethnicity of the community.  Come join the fun at Prescott Elementary, 10410 N.E. Make a difference to Gateway

The Opportunity Gateway Program Advisory Committee (PAC) helps to guide projects in the Gateway area, such as the planned conversion of the Mall 205 area.  They are in charge of monies dedicated to parks, landscaping, transportation, and many other projects.

There will be two meetings in September.  PAC meets at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, at Adventist Hospital, 10123 S.E. Market.  There will also be a Transportation Committee meeting on Monday, September 24, at 5:30 p.m. in the East Portland Community Center, 640 SE 106th Ave.

Join the Elks and Elkettes

The Gateway Elkettes annual Holiday Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 3, and Sunday November 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gateway Elks Lodge, 711 NE 100th Ave.  More than 50 tables of handcrafted gifts for all ages, holiday decorations and homemade baked goods, jams and jellies will be featured.  A lunchroom with free coffee will be available.

In addition, on Sunday, November 4, The Gateway Elks Lodge and St. Rita Catholic Church Italian Spaghetti Dinner will be served in the Elks Lodge dining room from noon to 6 p.m. at a nominal cost.
