Create a healthy, nurturing landscape
East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District wants to help you reduce storm water runoff, create wildlife habitat and contribute to healthy streams. To that end, free naturescaping and rain garden workshops are planned.

Rain Gardens 101 will be offered on Saturday, May 16 at Portland Nursery, 9000 S.E. Division St. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rain gardens are a great way to add beautiful landscaping to your yard and protect overloaded urban sewers and streams at the same time. This workshop will explain how to build a rain garden on your property to keep our streams clean and healthy. Advanced registration is required. Register online at www.emswcd.org/workshops-events.

Naturescaping Basics will be taught on Saturday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lake House at Blue Lake Park, 21154 N.E. Blue Lake Road, in Fairview. Naturescaping is the practice of designing a landscape so it reduces water use, storm water runoff and pollution without sacrificing splendor. Plus, it saves you time, money, and energy -- all while providing a beautiful habitat for birds, wildlife and you. Naturescaping Basics introduces attendees to their connection with the watershed, native plants of the Pacific Northwest, pollution prevention and other core concepts of naturescaping. Advanced registration is required. Register online at www.emswcd.org/workshops-events.

Homeownership fair expands target
Launched three years ago by ROSE (Revitalize Outer Southeast) Community Development, the annual Lents Home Buying Fair quickly became a dependable resource for people seeking home-buying tips and information.

Through the Lents Homeownership Initiative, more than 50 partners work together to make homeownership a reality for more families.

Now known as the East Portland Homeownership Fair, the event will be held at Kelly Elementary School, 9030 S.E. Cooper St., on Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free. Once again, the fair's biggest attraction will be the drawing for a $4,000 homebuyer's assistance grant. The winner will be able to use the money to help purchase a home. When the doors open for the event, visitors will have a wider-than-ever array of workshops to attend and home-ownership professionals to connect with.

"After three years," said ROSE Executive Director Nick Sauvie, "we took a look at what we'd been doing and decided it was time for the fair to evolve." ROSE is a nonprofit affordable housing agency that has worked in outer Southeast Portland for 18 years.

That evolution includes an extensive outreach campaign into all east Portland neighborhoods, with a particular emphasis on the David Douglas School District and the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood just east of 122nd Avenue.

ROSE has also worked hard to connect with East Portland's growing immigrant population. The fair will have interpreters for attendees who speak Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Cantonese and Mandarin.

THE ARTS
Watercolor workshop featuring acrylics
Portland Fine Arts Guild meets on the first three Mondays of the month at the Russellville Grange, Northeast 121st and Prescott Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for instruction classes and demonstrations.

Classes for April 6, 13 and 20 will be taught by Edith Turner, an art judge and instructor who favors acrylics. She was born and raised on the Oregon Coast and has fond memories of the tall trees, the sea, sandy beaches, and lighthouses, which all present vivid natural images of Oregon. The love for art is reflected in her paintings, while the quick-drying time of acrylics allows freedom to capture the moment.

The first class painting will be dealing with a foggy background, a middle ground and a dramatic foreground, up close and personal. Bring your own photo of flowers, leaves, etc., for the foreground, or you can paint the blackberry vines Turner will be demonstrating. The second painting will be a free-hand seascape.

Please bring an 11" x 14" canvas, your acrylic paints and brushes. Turner uses ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, hookers green, Mars orange, both a light and medium yellow, dioxazine purple, magenta, cadmium red deep and gesso for white.

Classes are $12 for nonmembers and $10 for members; however if you are a first time visitor, the class fee is waived. Coffee is provided. Bring your own lunch or visit one of the nearby fast-food restaurants. To find out more, please visit www.portlandfineartsguild.org.
