The boys and girls basketball teams at Portland Christian High School made history by both winning state titles. This season marks the first time a 2A school has won both boys and girls basketball championships in the same year.

Ranked #1 in the state going into the tournament, the girls led the way with a 51-34 win over third-ranked St. Mary's. The victory capped a perfect 29-0 season and is the first time since 1998 that a 2A girls team went undefeated.

On their way to the title, the girls, coached by Tom West, beat Heppner 66-43 and Salem Academy 57-38.
Junior Brittaney Niebergall was named MVP of the tournament. Senior Kaely Maltman was named to the all-tournament team. Jessica Beliel, also a senior, earned second team honors.

By defeating Central Linn, 54-38, the boy's team won their second 2A title in three years. The Royal's out-rebounded the Cobras 37-22 and shot almost 65 percent from the field in the second half. They beat Salem Academy 38-25 in first-round action and Knappa 49-45 on their way to the title game.

Senior Vance Downey was named to the all-tournament team. The boys are coached by Jeff Huston.

They've been runners-up five times, but this year the Parkrose Elite danced their way to the state title in the show division of the OSAA Dance Championships at the Memorial Coliseum last month. Hours of hard work paired with an elegant, creative routine paid off for this group coached by Shannon Nguyen.

Taylor Ballard and Belinda Washington earned individual honors by placing third and sixth respectively in the Drill Down competition.

While neither the Parkrose boys or girls basketball teams qualified for post-season play, a number of players received all-conference honors. Freshman Shyanne Ackles was named to the second team. Juniors Kristina Macon and Mariah Logan received honorable mention, as did sophomores Sydnee Ennes and Koy Saechoa.

Sophomore Orlando Vance was named to the conference third team. Julian Faciane, a senior, received honorable mention.

The Bronco boys swim team finished third at the district meet. All-conference second team honors went to senior Nathan Clement, juniors Jeremy Ibrahim and Nolan Pow, sophomore Taylor Addie and freshman Rusty Meyer. Sophomore Nadison Kannan and freshman Jeremy Clement earned honorable mention honor.

The girls team placed fourth at district. Juniors Brianna Newman, Marissa Stevens and Gabriella Wolpert were named to the all-conference second team along with sophomore Lexie Torland. Honorable mention went to senior Elena Curtin and sophomore Annelise Coxeff.

Editor's note: While winter sports results information was requested from all area high schools, not all were able to respond by press time.
