Boxing coach, father passes

Joel Caldera 1968–2014
COURTESY CALDERA FAMILY
Parkrose resident Joel Peñalver Caldera, age 46, died June 23, 2014. He was born April 17, 1968 in Zacatecar, Mexico. Mr. Caldera was a graduate of Jefferson High School and won a Northwest Regional boxing championship, while in high school. He attended Oregon State University.

He was a restaurateur, operating Catalina’s Restaurant, with locations in Parkrose and St. Johns. He was also a well-loved boxing coach through Portland’s Knott Street Boxing Club in Matt Dishman Center (“Restaurateur puts up his dukes for kids and the community” MCM Dec. 2002). In addition, he organized and promoted youth boxing cards in the family restaurant’s parking lot in Parkrose (“Parkrose parking lot rumble peaceful” MCM Sept. 2007). He credited his involvement as a young boxer with giving him a sense of self-discipline and motivation to succeed. As a coach, he passed these qualities on to the young people who trained with him.

He is survived by his mother, Catalina Caldera; brothers Jorge Meza, Jaime Caldera, Fortunato Peñalver, and Eduardo Peñalver; sisters Esmeralda Caldera and Monica Meza; sons Lorenzo Joel Caldera and Valentino Joel Caldera; and daughters Sophia Catalina Caldera and Adriana Catrice Roberson. There are three grandchildren.

Services were held at St. Andrew’s Church in Portland with a viewing at Dignity Memorial.
