In September, Alex and Ben Farnstrom, brothers from Independence, Ore., purchased Gable & Parkrose Funeral Chapel. The name has been changed to Farnstrom-Gable Funeral Chapel.

Offering funerals and cremations, the business is located at 225 N.E. 80th Ave. in Portland.

“We always thought of Portland as a big city overcrowded with funeral providers,” said Ben Farnstrom. Instead, we found several small communities within a big city. The people of Montavilla, Gateway and Parkrose neighborhoods, along with others, have been very nice to work with.”

As for the city being overcrowded with funeral providers, the brothers are not worried.

“It is a service-based industry,” said Alex Farnstrom, “and people know the value of good service. That is all any funeral provider has to offer, and we are confident in the service we provide.”

The Farnstroms promise their firm will continue to offer the finest in funeral and cremation service while maintaining competitive pricing.

Along with an update of the name, some of the facilities at the funeral chapel have been updated, although the changes are so subtle the public won’t notice.

The name change was important to the Farnstroms.

“We elected to add our name to the business,” Alex Farnstrom said, “to show the new change. We kept the Gable name to show the deep history the funeral home has within the community.

“Although Gable Funeral Home combined with Parkrose Funeral Home in 1993,” he continued, “we have dropped the name ‘Parkrose’ for our firm, since we are not in the Parkrose area.”

Changes at the funeral home include a new merchandise center to replace the dated casket display room. Also slated for the future will be the remodeling of the reception area, chapel and foyer.

“Please feel free to come visit us,” Ben Farnstrom said to Memo readers.

The Farnstroms’ spouses are an integral part of the business, answering phones and helping with office work. Ben’s wife is Kelly, and Alex’s wife is Misty. Alex and Misty have a six-month-old daughter named Nicole.

The telephone number at Farnstrom-Gable Funeral Chapel is 503-253-7569. More information is also available on the World Wide Web at www.farnstroms.com.
