John D. Webster, who grew up in Parkrose, attending Russell Elementary, Parkrose Middle School and graduating from Parkrose High School in 1989, was recently promoted to senior chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy. Currently, he is in Afghanistan as part of the American effort to oust Taliban forces from the region.

In his 19 years in the military, Webster has been stationed in San Diego, Calif.; Norfolk, Va.; Pascagoula, Miss. and Helena, Mont. The move to Montana came after Hurricane Katrina destroyed Gulf Coast bases. Webster's assignment there was training reservists for combat duty in Iran and Afghanistan.

In 2008, he volunteered for duty in Afghanistan and has been there since October. He is the fire chief at Camp Phoenix and surrounding outposts near Kabul and also trains Afghan officers at the war college.

A fun-loving kid, Webster began friendships in preschool that he maintains today. His sense of humor drew other kids to him and endeared him to their parents. He was a boy scout and enjoys water skiing, snow skiing and horseback riding and is a supportive and loving brother to his siblings.

His parents instilled in him a love for fishing, camping and the outdoors. Monty and Pat (Molenkamp) Webster are also PHS alumni, graduating in 1968 and '69 respectively. All their children and one grandchild are also PHS graduates.

Webster is described by his mother, Pat, as a spirited kid with a streak of mischief and, while he did not view the military as a career choice when he joined the Navy a year out of high school, she and her husband, Monty, saw it as a perfect fit.

Webster met his wife, Dee Dee, while stationed in Virginia. She and their two young boys, Nick (7) and Joe (5), live in Norfolk.
