The Oregon Scholastic Activities Association dance and drill championship competitions were held at Veteran's Memorial Coliseum last month and perennial contender Parkrose came away with the second place trophy in the show division; Reynolds placed fifth; David Douglas dancers earned sixth place.

Parkrose dancers rose to the top in the drill down competition. Carlea Sundin led the way earning the state title. Kat Kerr placed third and Chazmyne Brown placed fifth. Veronika Fitzgerald of Reynolds earned fourth place honors.

The 47 members of the Parkrose dance team are equally proud of their top ten ranking in the 5A Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All Stars with a combined cumulative GPA of 3.27.

The OSAA 6A wrestling championship second place team trophy now rests in the David Douglas trophy case. Josh Reyes 138-pound is the state champion. Elijah Taylor (152 lb) and Cody Patterson (220 lb) each placed third; Vagif Afrasov (132 lb) placed fourth; and Jeramiah Baker (120 lb) placed fifth. Coach Ron Holyoak was named 6A coach of the year.

The Reynolds High girls swim team returned from the OSAA State Championships with the fourth place trophy. The Raiders were led by seniors Chrisy Vo and Rachel Lorenson, and sophomores Abby Maricle and Christy Hartestein.

This group placed third in the 200-yard medley relay and fourth in both the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays. Vo added points with a third place finish in the 50-yard freestyle event, Maricle scored with third in the 100-yard butterfly and Hartestein was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle.

David Douglas senior Nikki Overton captured third place in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle. Overton along with seniors Pamela Kennedy and Nhat Nguyen and freshman Emma Redwine-Hixon came in sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay to carry the Scots to a ninth place finish at state.

The David Douglas boys basketball team earned the respect of teams around the state with a 68-45 victory over Sunset in the first round of OSAA 6A championship action and a 54-53 win over powerhouse Westview in second round play. Jesuit handed the Scots a 68-45 defeat in the quarterfinals sending them to the consolation bracket where they beat South Medford 62-54 before losing to Lincoln 58-57 and earning the sixth place trophy. They also won the tournament's sportsmanship trophy.

The Parkrose girls basketball team earned a first round berth for the first time in many years, but were crushed 74-21 by Springfield in the play-in game.

Portland Christian girls entered the 2A OSAA basketball championship bracket by virtue of a 36-32 victory over Pilot Rock, but were sent to the consolation bracket by Santiam, 47-42. They beat Riverdale 31-25, advancing to the fourth-place game against Oakland. Oakland walked away with a 33-24 victory and the trophy, leaving the Royals in sixth.
