Connect with your family
The East Portland Community Center is now offering a fun-filled Family Night. This drop-in program is a low-cost way to spend a fun night together with your family. A variety of activities are offered, including basketball, a trampoline, craft activities, music and dance performances, the toys from the Indoor Park program, and a snack. An adult must accompany children. Take this opportunity to spend some relaxed time with your kids. Drop in for the next session! Sessions are held Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E 106th Ave. The last session will be held on Friday, Dec. 13. Cost is $5 per family. Open a world of words
Volunteers are needed in the Mid-county area to tutor adults who need to learn or improve their reading and writing skills. Oregon Literacy, Inc. offers this opportunity to improve someone else’s life while enriching your own. Become a volunteer tutor! Every day a holiday
The East Portland Community Center is offering an unusual preschool winter break camp for ages 4 to 6. Every day is a celebration and a holiday somewhere in the world. Children who sign up for “Holidays, Holidays, Holidays” spend winter break celebrating a different holiday each day. They will learn new customs, traditions and enjoy tasting and cooking unusual foods. Class costs $6 per day and runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Older kids can lose their winter time blues with “Winter Madness” This camp for kids aged 5 to 10 helps kids to make new friends, gain skills, and flex their imaginations through sports, crafts and gym games. Kids will create special presents that can be used as gifts. Both a morning session from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and an afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. are offered. Each session costs $10.

Midland offers free classes and activities
The Midland Library, located at 805 S.E. 122nd Ave., offers many free activities for adults and families. Library hours are: Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Monday.

In December, weekly events include computer and Internet classes and story times. There will also be many special events. For more information on any of the listed programs or to pre-register for a free class, please call the library at 503-988-5392.

•Story Stop: Listen to stories almost every day. Children newborn to 6 years of age and their adults are invited to join in for a fun program of short stories. Story stop is held Tuesdays through Saturdays at 1:30 p.m.
•Decorative Keepsake Boxes: Artist Colleen Cavin shows you how to create keepsake boxes out of decorative paper. These creative and unique boxes make a great gift! This workshop for families will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 2 to 3 p.m.
•Holiday Card Making: Experiment with paper textures, color, and shape placement, mixed media, collage, and stamping with artist Vanessa Hughes. This workshop, held on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m., is recommended for children 6 years of age and older.
•The Lion and the Mouse: Aesop’s stories have entertained and instructed audiences of all ages through the centuries. One of the best loved is this tale of an insomniac lion and his mouse rescuer. Be prepared to be a part of the action as the Oregon Puppet Theater presents this classic with audience participation. The presentation will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28 from 2 to 3 p.m.
•Read to the Dogs: Improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to therapy dogs. The dogs and handlers are from the Dove Lewis Animal Assisted Therapy program. Pre-registration is required for this class, held on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. To pre-register, please call 503-988-5391.
•Email for Beginners: Prerequisite: Web Basics. Learn how to use a free email on the Web like Yahoo or Hotmail. Sign up, then compose and send messages anywhere in the world. Get connected with this workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required for this class, please call 503-988-5392.
•Web Basics: Learn about the World Wide Web, explore the library’s homepage and practice entering web addresses. Participants need to be comfortable using a keyboard and mouse. Learn something new
A variety of classes are offered this month at the Gregory Heights Library, 7921 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Gregory Heights Library hours are Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Monday. •Wrapping Paper Workshop: Create your own personalized wrapping paper using assorted stamps and papers. Artist Colleen Cavin teaches this workshop, held on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

•Cyber Sundays: Free one-on-one computer help is available for the whole family. Friendly, trained volunteers help you search the Web, play educational CD-ROM games, look up books and more. You can learn to use the library’s online catalog, databases and guides. You can also use this time to practice basic computer skills. Cyber Sundays are held on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
•Cyber Seniors Computer Class: This series of three classes is designed for seniors who are interested in learning the very basics of how to use a computer. Learn to use a mouse, search the Internet, and send and receive e-mail. Each session will consist of one hour of instruction and one hour of practice. The sessions will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, Tuesday, Dec. 10, and Tuesday, Dec. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required: please call 503-988-5386.
