FUNDRAISERS
Annual SnowCap Valentine Dinner/Auction date set
The sixth annual SnowCap Community Charities Valentine Dinner/Auction is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel, 8235 N.E. Airport Way. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the silent auction. A plated dinner starts at 7 p.m. with oral auction bidding to follow.

New auction Chair Julie Bradford is hopeful this year’s Valentine-themed event can raise more than $50,000. Last year’s auction raised $46,000. “The $50,000 goal is doable,” she said.

Major auction items include vacation packages, fishing trips, dine-outs and personal services. Attendees have an opportunity to bid on a lunch with Gresham Police Chief Carla Piluso and a brunch with Multnomah County Sheriff Bernie Giusto.

Advance reservations are required. Tickets are $50 per person. Tables also are available.

Additional information and ticket reservations are available from SnowCap at 503-674-8785, ext. 17, or rhea@snowcap.org.

SnowCap Community Charities is a volunteer nonprofit, faith-based agency that provides food, clothing, seasonal energy assistance, English language instruction and advocacy services for low-income and needy families and individuals in east Multnomah County.

Valentine-A-Gram features cinnamon rolls, chocolates
Valentine-A-Gram, the popular holiday gift box, will feature both Cinnabon cinnamon rolls and a nine-piece box of Candy Basket chocolates this Valentine’s Day. Proceeds from Valentine-A-Gram support Loaves & Fishes Centers, the Meals-on-Wheels people.

More than 400 volunteers will deliver Valentine-A-Grams to individuals and businesses on the morning of Thursday, Feb.14 to benefit the more than 5,000 Portland- and Vancouver-area seniors served by Loaves & Fishes Centers daily.

Each Valentine-A-Gram includes two delicious Cinnabons, a packet of fresh ground Seattle’s Best Coffee, orange juice from Sun Orchard Premium Juices, a jar of Cinnabon’s famous Makarra cinnamon, an insulated travel mug and — new this year — a 9-piece box of chocolates from Candy Basket. The gift box also includes gift certificates for Jamba Juice and Good Dog Bad Dog. The cost for each Valentine-A-Gram is $29.95.

All of the products for the gift boxes are donated so that 100 percent of the money raised through the sale of Valentine-A-Grams goes to support the Meals-On-Wheels program. Hundreds of people who volunteer to deliver Valentine-A-Grams make the event possible each year.

Cinnabon owners John Whittaker and Steve Foltz said their support of the 13th annual Valentine-A-Gram fundraiser has become a tradition that illustrates the importance of corporate giving.

“Both (Foltz) and I, and all our Cinnabon employees, feel very proud of the opportunity to support an organization as deserving as Loaves & Fishes Centers,” Whittaker said. “The fact that 100 percent of the purchase price goes directly to providing food to seniors makes this an extra-special event.”

Deliveries take about an hour and begin at 7:30 a.m. Pick-up points are available on both the east and west sides of Portland and in Vancouver.

Order Valentine-A-Grams by Feb. 7 from www.loavesandfishesonline.org or by phone at 503-736-6325. You can also volunteer to deliver at the Web site.

Instrument appraisal fair funds scholarships
For anyone who has an old violin in the closet, a trumpet in the attic or a guitar in the garage, this is a chance to find out if it’s a clunker or a keeper. The Community Music Center will host a musical instrument appraisal fair on Sunday, March 9 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The public can enjoy food and live music while obtaining verbal appraisals on instruments from some of Portland’s top appraisers.

Musical instruments can increase in value, depending on the maker, condition and other factors, sometimes with profitable results. David Kerr of David Kerr Violin Shop relates a time when a customer brought a special violin to his shop for valuation. The instrument was from an estate; the deceased had never had it appraised or insured. It turned out to have true Stradivarius pedigree, worth $400,000. “It was pretty exciting,” Kerr said.

Paul Schuback of Paul Schuback Violins knows of a client who bought three violin bows at a garage sale in Seattle for $100. A famous French bow maker named Pecatte made one of them. Bows by him have fetched upwards of $200,000 at auction. “These big ticket items are rare,” Schuback said. “More common is the $3,000 to $4,000 instrument. The real prize is any time you find an instrument that is worthwhile to own and play.”

Ballpark verbal appraisals on violins, violas, cellos, woodwinds, brass and guitars will be available at this event. In addition to the food and live music, there’ll be door prizes, a sheet music thrift sale and an opportunity to enter a Hawaii vacation raffle. Appraisal times are not reserved -- ticket holders may come any time between 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. There will be a $5 entry fee and a $25 charge for each verbal appraisal. Tickets are on sale at Brown Paper Tickets, www.brownpapertickets.com or 1-800-838-3006.

Appraisals close at 6 p.m. Participants can arrange for written appraisals directly with the professionals.

The Community Music Center, 3350 S.E. Francis St., is a Portland Parks & Recreation facility in partnership with an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that raises money to help subsidize tuition fees at the school. Benefit events such as this one support a need-based scholarship fund that enables students with limited means to learn to play musical instruments. For more information, call 503-823-3177 or visit www.communitymusiccenter.org.
