Memo Pad

To fully serve the community, the Mid-county Memo offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers’ lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors.

Memo Pad submissions for the February issue are due by Friday, Jan. 13. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail editorial submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672.

Hazelwood activist to be recognized
Linda Robinson, the Environmental Preservation Award winner at the 2005 Mid-county Memo Community Awards last May, is being honored again. This time the Columbia Slough Watershed Council will recognize her as one of its Leadership Award winners. According to the council, this award goes to “individuals who demonstrate an extraordinary and long-term commitment to the watershed.”

Robinson will be recognized for “her years of advocacy for the Big Four Corners Acquisition, work on the Port of Portland Land Use Advisory Committee and the City-wide Parks Advisory Committee,” according to the council. The council continued to comment that, “Linda has demonstrated extraordinary leadership. Her actions have directly helped to restore, enhance and preserve the watershed.”

The council invites you to attend its Annual Awards Celebration on Friday, Jan. 20 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 7900 N.E. 82nd Ave. A silent auction will start the evening, followed by a no host bar, dinner and music.

In addition to Leadership Awards, the council will hand out Achievement Awards and Outstanding Service Awards.

Tickets are $30 per person. RSVP by Jan. 13 online at columbiaslough.org or contact Eric Kellon at eric.kellon@columbiaslough.org or 503-281-1132.

Chess team brings home trophy
Congratulations to the Portland Christian High School chess team. This group of nine came within one win of a first place tie in the Washington State Tournament recently. This is a major tournament comprised of much larger schools and nearly 9,000 players in all. For some of the Portland Christian players, this was their first tournament. The high school is located in Parkrose at 12425 N.E. San Rafael St.

Volleyball team takes sixth
In mid November the Portland Christian High School volleyball team earned a sixth place trophy at the 2A State Championship tournament held at Pacific University. While this was the third consecutive trip to state, it has been 30 years since the team made it to the trophy bracket.

Senior standout Rachel McCain will graduate this year, but the majority of the team consists of returning juniors and sophomores. Hopes are high that they will make another run at the state title again next year.

Area service club gathers cell phones for victims of abuse
Columbia View Kiwanis continues to collect old cell phones. They are given to an organization that re-programs them to only dial 911. The phones are then provided free to individuals who are in abusive situations. You may donate these to the club by taking them to SnowCap at Southeast 178th Avenue and Mill Street or to Russellville Park Retirement Home, Southeast 103rd Avenue and East Burnside Street. The ever-helpful Kiwanis representative Charlie Ross at 503-252-1570 can offer other options should neither of these be convenient for you.

The Kiwanis also invite women and men who are interested in giving service to the community to join the club. They meet at Russellville Park every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. If you stop by to check them out, they will buy you lunch.

Garden offers volunteer training
Leach Botanical Garden needs tour guides and outdoor classroom teachers.

Tour guides will conduct public tours at the garden beginning in February and running through November. Tours with different monthly themes are offered each Saturday at 10 a.m. and last approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

If you are able to volunteer two hours a month, enjoy talking to the public and have an interest in plants, history or ecology, please sign up for Tour Guide Training.

Training will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the garden, 6704 S.E. 122nd Ave.

If you enjoy teaching children and introducing them to fascinating plant facts and would you like to foster future stewards of the environment, become a teacher at Leach Botanical Garden’s Outdoor Classroom. The classes are small with a typical ratio of 1:6, are approximately two hours long, take place during the school term and are dependent upon school requests.

Training is offered on Thursday, Jan. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. also at the garden.

For more information or to register call Katie at 503-761-4751 or Nancy at 503-823-1671 or e-mail info@leachgarden.org. The Memo is big fan of Leach Botanical Garden, and has visited it many times. It’s just a little slice of heaven in the midst of the city. Check it out.
