More than 40 Portland General Electric volunteers took part in a Volunteer Power Day at the David Douglas School District in Portland on Thursday, April 27. PGE volunteers helped district librarians cover new hardback and paperback books, preserving them for future use. Northeast Portland resident Ken Carter, a 25-year PGE veteran who is currently a Web site developer, spent the afternoon covering dozens of books.

People power fuels PGE workday
In conjunction with celebrating its stock issuance milestone that took place last month, Portland General Electric has embarked on a series of employee Volunteer Power Days, which included a workday Thursday, April 27, at David Douglas School District.

During the four-hour afternoon work session, more than 40 PGE volunteers helped district librarians cover 910 new hardback and paperback books, preserving them for future use. According to DDSD staff, each year the district orders and processes 6,000 books. Each book is covered to increase its life span from approximately one year to three.

“Anything that can be done to allow our librarians to spend more time working directly with students is so beneficial,” said Sherrie Barger, director of curriculum at DDSD. “Having PGE volunteers help us means we can get new books into the hands of kids at a much faster rate and librarians can spend more time working one-on-one with students.”

Librarians typically spend between one and three hours after school working on projects, such as covering books.

“The PGE volunteers did an excellent job and were a fun and energetic group,” said Patty White, librarian at Ventura Park Elementary School. “David Douglas librarians are extremely thankful to them for helping us accomplish so much in one afternoon.”

During the coming weeks, the 910 newly covered books will be distributed to 14 schools and 9,822 students within the David Douglas School District.

Unitus scores a hole-in-one for shelter
On Saturday, May 13, Unitus Community Credit Union raised $220 for nonprofit organization My Father’s House at the Gateway Area Business Association Golf-O-Rama Golf Tournament.

Unitus Mall 205 Branch Manager Tonya Winslow and Business Development Officer Brett Wooden stopped at hole nine to entice Gateway area golfers with a good, old-fashioned bet - in the name of charity, of course.

A ten-foot circle was set up around hole nine. As golfers arrived at the tee and agreed to donate money to My Father’s House, Unitus agreed to double their money if the tee shot landed within that ten-foot circle. If the golfer did not make it, the money was donated to My Father’s House.

My Father’s House is a family shelter in east Multnomah County that provides a safe environment for up to five families as they address spiritual, physical and emotional issues and needs. For more information about My Father’s House, visit www.mfhshelter.org.
