Well-loved Native Elder 'Uncle' Louis Pacheco passes
Born Aug. 25, 1931 in Tonopah, Nev. Louis was a member of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe. After attending high school, Louis became the Flyweight Boxing Champion of Nevada by winning the Golden Gloves Tournament in 1948. During the Korean War he served 10 months as a rifleman in the 44th Infantry Division from Fort Lewis, Wash. and was promoted in Japan to sergeant 1st Calvary Division. Louis served another 10 months in the Korean War with the 74th Infantry Division. Louis worked for the railroad for over 20 years in California, Oregon and Washington and resided in Los Angeles for a number of years before moving to Portland in the late 1980s. He has been a involved with the Native American Youth Association and Family Center as a Portland American Indian Elder member for more than 10 years. An active member of the Portland Northwest Indian Veterans Association since 2005, Louis attended Portland American Indian Elders, Pi-Nee-Waus and Good Spirit gatherings in Northeast Portland. Friends knew him as a devout Catholic who cheerfully gave to both the church and the NAYA Family Center. Uncle Louie was well-loved and respected by many and is survived by his brother, two sisters and son Delmar Pacheco, Jr. of Ely, Nev. A memorial was held for Louis at Portland's NAYA Family Center on Aug. 23 and he was buried on Aug. 26 in Fallon, Nev. |
