Champions abound in Mid-county Editor's Note: While we work hard to gather information for all schools in the Memo's circulation area, this round up is not comprehensive. Parkrose Athletic Director Dave Richardson and Portland Christian Athletic Director each pointed out that every varsity team from their schools advanced to postseason play this year. Topping the list of fall sports teams is the Portland Christian football team. The 25 team members have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 earning them the top spot among 2A football teams statewide. Each player received a got milk?' sweatshirt and PC will receive a plaque to display in its trophy case. Other Portland Christian teams earning academic all-star status are boys cross country (3.75), volleyball (3.33), boys soccer (3.25) and girls' soccer (3.56). Among 5A schools, Madison girls cross country led the way with a 3.92 GPA and second place ranking in the state. Madison boys cross country (3.77), volleyball (3.38), boys soccer (3.l7) and girls soccer (3.27) made the list as well. City Christian boys soccer ranked fourth in state in its division. The 24 students on the team earned a 3.66 cumulative GPA. Parkrose teams earning Academic All Star honors are boys cross country (3.12), volleyball (3.03) and girls soccer (3.17). David Douglas girls cross-country had the highest GPA (3.77) among the Scots teams receiving academic all-star recognition. Other teams with a 3.0 or better are boys cross country (3.12), volleyball (3.51) and girls soccer (3.25). Cross Country Sophomore Kennedy Allen and junior Brynne Merkley represented David Douglas at the girls cross country state meet. Rachel Chao, a junior, competed for Reynolds. Portland Christian senior Sisay Gillock (first team all-league, first team all-district, and first team all-state) placed third out of 109 runners in the 2A cross country state championships with a time of 16:20, at an incredible pace of 5:16, the second fastest time in the state. Sisay Gillock and Joseph Perkins (first team all-league) both had great seasons for the team with Sisay running a 15:55 5k at the league championships along with his third place finish at state, said Coach Andrew Jannsen. Joseph showed his heart for others by stopping in the district race to care for a fallen opponent. Parkrose junior Kim Maureschaat earned Northwest Oregon Conference honorable mention. Football Ranked first going into the playoffs, Portland Christian averaged more than 30 points a game during the season. The Royals rolled over North Douglas 49-0 and roughed-up Knappa 21-7, but fell to Grant Union 34-24 in a tough semi-final game to end the season. Coach Cal Szueber was named Northwest Conference Coach of the Year. The conference also named Steven Mumford co-offensive player of the year and first team quarterback. Chris Debusman is Defensive Player of the Year, first team linebacker and second team running back. They were joined on the conference all-star team by Nathan Mumford (wide receiver and defensive back), Jesse Delucia (running back), David Gulid (wide receiver and defensive back), Nathan Carpenter (offensive line), Jess Cayatano (kicker), Emile Wolpert (defensive line), and Paul Pepalaskov (linebacker). Pepalaskov was also named to the second team as a punter. He was joined by Tim Grishkevich (defensive line). Jack Hoffarth earned honorable mention as an offensive lineman. Parkrose posted a 6-4 season record and hosted its first playoff game in more than 30 years. Without star quarterback Jonathan Boland to lead them, the Broncos lost to Eugene's Churchill Lancers 42-30, ending an exciting season. Boland, a junior, shared Northwest Oregon Conference player of the year honors with Sherwood's Keegan Lawrence. Boland, wide receiver Marshawn Edwards, cornerback Andre Johnson and safety Nicarrio Reliford were named to the Northwest Oregon All-Conference Team. Second team honors went to Michael Hurlic, Vincent Vy (wide receivers) and Josh Bradford (defensive line). David Douglas lost to Lake Oswego 42-21 in its state play-in game and Reynolds stumbled 49-27 against play-in opponent North Medford. Soccer The Portland Christian boys posted a first round state play-off win against Western Mennonite (4-0) but failed to advance when Oregon Episcopal defeated them 4-0 in the next match. The girls lost in a first round match to Dayton, 5-0. Both the boys and girls soccer teams put players on all-league teams. Boys team awards went to senior Jess Cayetano, first team; senior Austin Rogers, Keeper of the Year and first team; and senior T.J. Burton, second team. Sophomore Drew Dayton says of their season, Our three senior captains, Jess Cayetano, T.J. Burton, and Austin Rogers did a great job leading us throughout the season with Jess tying the school record with 21 goals. We made it all the way to the second round of state. Girls team members that received awards are sophomore Cezanne Brunner and senior Julia Whalen, both first team; senior Marena Helgerson and freshman Jensyn Lown, second team; and sophomores Serena Remington and Kelsey Whalen, honorable mention. The 10-5 Bronco boys ousted Madison 1-0 to advance in the state playoffs, but were crushed 7-1 by Hood River Valley in their second match. Northwest Oregon Conference all-conference honors went to defender Gustavo Torres and midfielder Fernando Ibanez. Second team honors went to senior defender Rodrigo Rodriguez, senior forward Brandon Lo and senior midfielder Nick Hansen. Freshman midfielders Kevyn Lo and David Cruz and goalkeeper Emanuel Valdovinos earned honorable mentions. Parkrose girls also advanced in postseason play with a 4-0 win over Springfield only to see their season end in a 6-1 loss to Summit, a Bend school. The Bronco girl receiving all-league honors was Alexia Krieger, second team defender. Honorable mentions went to forwards Jada Krening and Shelby Martin and to midfielder Jennifer Barrientos. Reynolds boys beat McNary 4-1 in a play-in match, but went down to Century 2-1 the following week in a close match. The girls lost to West View 5-0 to end their post season play. Maddie Brayson earned all-state second team honors. Carmen Avalos, Hannah Felzien, JoJo Lauderback and goalkeeper Alondra Maldonado received honorable mentions. Both David Douglas teams earned play-in matches, but both were defeated: The boys by McMinnville/Sheridan Japanese Charter 2-1, and the girls by Thurston 4-0. Lady Scots Lacey Jones and Kennedy Engelgau were named to the all state second team. Whitney Beach and Melisa Kaltak earned honorable mentions. Volleyball Portland Christian began its run toward a state title with a 3-1 win over North Douglas, but lost to Days Creek, falling into the losers' bracket. In their next game, the Royals rallied with a 3-2 win over Oakridge, but settled for sixth place after losing to Kennedy 3-2. Several team members earned all-league awards: senior and All-League Player of the Year Stacy Kozlowski, first team honors; junior Carlee Sharman, first team libero, and senior Jenny Vorvick, second team. City Christian went 16-5 on the season. The Lions placed second in 1A-1 The Valley 10 conference. However, they lost 3-2 to Ione in their first playoff match at state. The Senators of Madison posted a 15-8 season record, but West Linn dashed their postseason hopes 3-0. Parkrose lost its only postseason match 3-0 to Bend. Northwest Oregon Conference named defensive specialist/libero Hailey Gruetzmacher to its first team. Honorable mentions went to Samantha Paltridge (all-around), setter Princess Anyanwu and middle blocker Katie Saephanh. Water Polo
On their way to the state tournament, the girls team won the 5A North tournament and placed second in the 6A Mt. Hood Conference tournament. Erica Evans and Samantha Baumgarner made second team all state. State honorable mention went to Rachel Herd and goalie Gabby Madewell. Evans earned first team honors at the 6A Mt. Hood Conference and the 5A North Conference tournaments. Baumgarner was 6A Mt. Hood first team. Madewell was named to the 6A Mt. Hood second team all conference, as was Hannah Croze. Croze, who plays for Parkrose but attends Portland Christian Jr/Sr High School, also made second team all-5A North. At state, the Parkrose boys lost to West Albany in the first round, ending their season. Conor Pow earned first team honors in both 5A North and 6A Mt. Hood. Cameron Tennyson was 6A Mt. Hood first team and 5A North second team. Goalie Dylan Thomas was first team 6A Mt. Hood. Zack Thomas, Isaac Hernandez, Jacob Sheeran and Eliott Thompson were second team 6A Mt. Hood. Reynolds girls water polo won the 6A third place title at state. |
