On Oct. 3, 1951, the day Bobby Thompson hit the “shot heard 'round the world” clinching the National League pennant for the San Francisco Giants, Mark Edward Phillips was born in Portland, Oregon. He died in his parents Parkrose home on Dec. 21, 2010. He was 59.

Not surprisingly, Mark grew up an avid Giants fan. He played baseball beginning in Little League through Babe Ruth and American Legion. High school teammates remember him as a stellar infielder who was instrumental in regularly turning double plays. One coach called him Hoover.

Mark attended Prescott and Russell Elementary schools, Parkrose Heights Junior High and Parkrose High School, graduating in 1969. Drawing and art were always a passion. He was the cartoonist for his junior high yearbook and won the Parkrose High art department award his senior year. After high school he studied at Mt. Hood Community College and Portland State University.

Over the years, Mark's work was shown at Mt. Hood Community College, The Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts, Jake's Famous Crawfish, the Chrisman Gallery, Cassidy's Restaurant, OMSI, the Portland Building opening in 1982, Northwoods Gallery, Stafford Farms, the Portland Art Museum and most recently, NW Resource Federal Credit Union in 2010. He is well known for his watercolors and pencil drawings. Pieces hang in private collections in Paris, New York, Boston, Miami, as well as Michigan, Colorado, Idaho, Washington, California, British Columbia and of course, here in Oregon.

Professionally, Mark worked in some of Portland's most highly regarded restaurants including the Refectory, Jake's, Cassidy's and McCormick & Schmick's.

Family members recall Mark's interest in their Finnish heritage and a genealogy project created by his aunt. He is survived by his parents, Ralph and Laurel; children and their spouses, Mathew (Jean), Kelsey Lewis (Rob) and Samuel; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeff (DeDe) and Rob (Libby); and three grandchildren, Emma, Sawyer and Michael.
