SCHOOL CORNER
Free summer meals available
Two David Douglas elementary schools will offer free meals to kids ages 18 and younger for about a three-week period this summer. The meals are available to any child who comes to one of the locations during meal hours.

Breakfast and lunch will be served from Monday, July 6 through Friday, July 24 at Ventura Park Elementary, 145 S.E. 117th Ave., and at Earl Boyles Elementary, 10822 S.E. Bush St.

Breakfast will be served from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m., while lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

No registration is necessary. Service is open to all children and is not restricted to David Douglas students.

Free and reduced cost swim lessons this summer
The David Douglas School District will offer swimming lessons to district students this summer, including free and reduced cost lessons to those who qualify. The lessons will be offered at the David Douglas swimming pool, Southeast 130th Avenue and Taylor Street.

Swimming lessons will be free for students who qualify for free lunch during the school year. The cost of swimming lessons will be reduced to $10 per two-week session for students who qualify for reduced cost lunch. Other students can take a two-week session of swimming lessons at the regular price of $30.

Contact the swimming pool between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 503-261-8378 to learn more.

Kindergarten registration
If you have a child who is 5 years old or will turn 5 on or before Sept. 1, it is time to enroll for kindergarten.

Registration in the David Douglas School District is now underway at your neighborhood school. Please go there to pick up registration materials. To complete the kindergarten registration process, you will need to bring your child’s birth certificate and immunization records, and proof of your residence. If you do not know your neighborhood school, please call 503-256-6526.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know in the district that will have a kindergarten student next year.

Preschool slots still open
A few preschool slots remain open for children 3 or 4 years of age by Sept. 1 at Gethsemane Lutheran Preschool, 11560 S.E. Market St. Preschool is offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m., September through May. Tuition is $125 per month. An optional lunch bunch program is available until 1 p.m. for an additional fee. Call 503-256-1835 for more information or to register.

SENIOR RESOURCES
Make a difference in a child’s life
An hour or so of your time each week can provide much needed academic support to our schools. Attend an informational meeting to learn how the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program helps students become more confident learners.

Public board meeting
The East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, serving Multnomah County east of the Willamette River, board of directors meeting is Monday, July 6 at 6 p.m. in the district board room, 5211 N. Cruise-in to be main topic
When the members of the Parkrose Business Association gather for their monthly luncheon on Thursday, July 16, the main topic of discussion will the Parkrose Festival and Cruise-in. Set for Saturday, Aug. 1, along Northeast Sandy Boulevard between 105th and 112th avenues, the cruise-in is the principal fundraiser for PBA scholarships for Parkrose High seniors. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn-Portland Airport, 8439 N.E. Columbia Blvd.

There will be a PBA board meeting on Wednesday, July 8 at 7 a.m. at the Pony Soldier Inn, 9901 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

Educate yourself about sex crimes in our community at EPIC meeting
The next East Precinct Involved Citizens meeting will be Wednesday, July 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the East Precinct Community Room, 737 S.E. 106th Ave.

The guest speaker will be Sergeant Mike Geiger of the Portland Police Bureau Sex Crimes Unit. The primary function of this unit is the investigation of promoting or compelling prostitution and juvenile sex trafficking. The Sex Crimes Unit is also responsible for investigating businesses that are fronts for prostitution. Special emphasis is given to the investigation of juvenile prostitution and those who profit from this crime.
