Longtime Gateway hair stylist passes

June Papenfuse Bauer, 82 July 03, 1929 March 30, 2012
June Bauer, owner and operator of Mr Oscar Hairstylists for more than 50 years passed away last month. She was 82.

She was born July 3, 1929 in Mankota, Canada, to William and Ola Papenfuse.

In 1946, June Papenfuse moved to Portland where she attended the Portland Beauty Academy. While attending school, she met Oscar Bauer. The two married Oct. 10, 1948 and had four children.

In 1957, Oscar and June built and opened Mr. Oscar Hairstylists in Gateway. He passed away in 1983 and June continued to operate the family business with her sons and daughter.

She was an avid tailor, walker and shopper. She loved to travel, attend live theatre and spend time with her family. June is survived by daughter, Renee Lippelgoos; sons, Greg, Mark and Warren; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In an interview published in the June 2009 edition, June said of her children's choice to become stylists, “All my children have done real well to be professionals, they're great hair stylists. They make me very proud of them and their work ethic.”

She also said, “I've really appreciated all the clients over the years. Those are wonderful relationships.” Bauer said several loyal customers have stayed with them the whole 52 years. “I've really enjoyed their company as well their business.”

Among the comments in the online Oregonian guest book accompanying June's obituary, Susie (Polly) Grover, of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas said to the family, “My prayers are with you all. You are lucky to have many memories of your mom. When I was 15-years old, she was my first boss. It was a pleasure to know her for these 40 plus years. She was fun and feisty; she'll be watching over you, that's for sure!”

Scott and Desiree Miller of Vancouver, Washington wrote, “Hip, cool, loving and caring. That's June. We will all miss her. Love to the entire family.”

A memorial service was held last month at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver, Washington.
