Memo Calendar... The Mid-county Memo is a newspaper dedicated to serving the community. Special Events Water Conservation Workshop Learn how to take control of your water and sewer bills. The Water Conservation Workshop, sponsored by the Community Energy Project, provides information on how to detect and repair leaks, water conservation ideas in and around your home, plus details on Portlands incredible water system. Each Portland household attending the workshop receives an instructional workbook and a free kit of materials worth $25. This workshop will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 11 to 12:30 a.m. at the Gregory Heights Library, 7921 N.E. Sandy Blvd. To register, please call 503-284-6827. Help provide services for local low-income families Oregon has some of the highest hunger and unemployment rates in the nation. The Mid-county area has been hit particularly hard. The Snow-CAP service organization is serving 33% more people than last year, and half of them are children. To help meet this growing need, Snow-CAP invites you to participate in the Snow-CAP Valentine Dinner Auction on Saturday, Feb. 8. Proceeds from this event will support Snow-CAPs work with local, low-income families. Programs that will benefit include Food 2 You, which delivers food to low income seniors, a community garden that allows families to grow their own vegetables and a family literacy program. You can help either by attending the Dinner Auction or by donating an item to be auctioned. Items of all types are need, both large and small. Any donations are happily accepted, including things like tickets to the zoo or sporting events. Start the New Year with a new approach to staying healthy, reducing stress The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is sponsoring a series of free Saturday seminars for the public beginning Saturday, Jan. 18. These sessions will discuss ways to get well and stay healthy by using traditional Chinese medicine. The ancient medical techniques developed over centuries in China can be helpful in easing stress, tension and other ailments of modern life. Each Saturday seminar starts at 10 a.m. and runs for 90 minutes.The seminar on Saturday, Jan. 18 will focus on Chinese medicinal herbs. At the seminar on Saturday, Jan. 25, the public will be introduced to the benefits of Oriental massage. On Saturday, Feb. 1, there will be a presentation on acupuncture and sample treatments will be offered. The final seminar on Saturday, Feb. 8 will demonstrate how gentle qigong meditative exercise can reduce stress and ease aches and pains. The seminars are free, but space is limited. Pride in diversity Come see, taste and experience Prescott Pride Goes Around the World, presented by Prescott Elementary School, 10410 N.E. Prescott St. This celebration of the diverse cultures found in our community will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Last year featured impressive artwork done collectively by each grade level, specialty foods created by parents and members of the community, and an array of talented, unusual entertainers. Weatherization Workshop Dont let your heating bills take you hostage. Take action and weatherize! Come to a workshop sponsored by the Community Energy Project and learn how to save energy through material installation, behavioral changes and simple maintenance around your home. Scott Community Center, 5530 SE 72nd Ave. on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. Local legislators to hold Town Hall In an effort to inform the community about upcoming legislative issues, local legislators Senator Avel Gordly (Senate District 23), Representative Steve March (House District 46) and Representative Jackie Dingfelder (House District 45) will hold a Town Hall meeting on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 N.E. 40th Ave. Oregon is facing a $1.4 billion shortfall, school funding uncertainty, continued high unemployment, and the highest rate of hunger in the nation, said Representative Dingfelder. I want to keep our community informed on these and other issues, as well as seek citizen input. This Town Hall will be a great opportunity for anyone who has questions or concerns theyd like to raise with their elected officials, including the upcoming vote on the temporary tax increase, said Representative March. We are here to serve the community. Senator Gordly adds, we will have information available on getting and staying involved in the legislative process.
